Always bind for less than 8 hours a day (the more breaks and time you can go without, the better!). Binding for long hours every day over time breaks down tissue and can cause breathing problems, back pain, and skin irritation. Never use duct tape or Ace bandages to bind your chest.
You can wear binding tape for a few days at a time without removing it, and you can exercise and shower with it on. Try to give yourself a break between binding sessions to be on the safe side (for example, leave it off for the weekend or overnight before putting on new tape).
Only bind for 8 to 10 hours at a time. Even the best binders can cause bruises or sores if you wear them too much. Take your binder off at night, just like other daytime clothing. Take breaks during the week.
Compression sports bras can be a good alternative to binding, particularly if you are looking to do exercise. I try not to bind when Im at home. One thing that helps with that is wearing pyjamas a lot - for some reason I find it easier to not bind when Im at home if Im wearing a pyjama top than a t-shirt!
If you wear a binder much, it causes the breast tissue to migrate into a different position. You can end up with very saggy breasts. Nobody has done a study on how quickly this happens. (Some bloggers suggest maybe a year, maybe several years, depending on how often you bind.)
One of the most important binder-safety tips is to never wear your binder when youre sleeping. At night, the lungs need space to move properly which is why you shouldnt bind at night. If you find it too confronting to sleep without a binder, perhaps wear a big T-shirt or a sports top.
Unsafe binding may lead to permanent deformation of the breasts, scarring, and lung constriction, and long-term binding may adversely affect the outcome of a future mastectomy.
