Hello, my name is Mary Oamp;#39;Riordan, I am a tour guide here in Chester Beatty. Today I would like to draw your attention to our collection of important book bindings which include hundreds of examples from the earliest Coptic bindings to special editions of the 20th century. In trying to reflect the scope of these bindings, I have chosen three from different parts of the world. The first one is this beautiful mid 19th century example from Delhi; of the persian technique of lacquer binding. These bindings were first developed in the early 15th century during the Timurid dynasty by craftsmen from Herat and docHubed the height of their popularity in the 18th and 19th centuries. The first step in the creation of the binding, was to make the base covers from layers of pasted paper known as pasteboard. These were then prepared for the painted design by applying a layer of gesso which is a white mixture of a binder; such as animal glue, with either chalk or gypsum. The lacquer made from l
