For example: if the flat tint of the piece is measured at 60%, while the intended flat tint was 50%, the printed piece would have a dot gain of 10% (60%-50%=10%). Note the use of % is treated like a unit of measure such as inches, kilograms, etc. rather than a real percentage.
Dot gain and TVI (tone value increase) mean the same thing. TVI is more inclusive a term because tone gain can happen where there is no halftone dot. Dot area is the measured tone value. For example, if a halftone patch of 50% measures 62% then the dot gain is 12% and the dot area is 62%.
For example, a dot pattern that covers 30% of the image area on film, but covers 50% when printed, is said to show a total dot gain of 20%.
Alteration. Any change made by the customer after copy or artwork has been given to the printer. The change could be in copy, specifications or both. Also called AA, author alteration and customer alteration. Aqueous Coating.
Cause: Overly aggressive pressure settings between the plate cylinder and the substrate can cause excessive dot gain. Solution: Adjusting the press pressure settings to the optimum level will improve dot placement accuracy and minimise dot gain.
Dot gain is a tricky flexo printing defect with a variety of causes. As its name implies, the dots on your printed substrate increase in size. The printed result then comes out darker and sometimes fuzzier than intended. Thats a quality defect you can ill afford.
The third cylinder in the offset lithography process is the impression cylinder. Made of clean steel, it turns in the opposite direction to the blanket cylinder. The impression cylinder transfers the ink as it presses paper against the rubber blanket.
