When the field separator (delimiter) is a comma, the file is in comma-separated (CSV) or comma-delimited format. Another popular delimiter is the tab. If a field contains the delimiter character within its text, the program interprets this as the end of the field rather than as part of the text.
CSV file mostly contains textual data and they do not contain any formulas. However, sometimes it happens that CSV files also contain formulas. Such CSV files should be loaded by setting the TxtLoadOptions. HasFormula as true.
Export data to a text file by saving it You can convert an Excel worksheet to a text file by using the Save As command. Go to File Save As. Click Browse. In the Save As dialog box, under Save as type box, choose the text file format for the worksheet; for example, click Text (Tab delimited) or CSV (Comma delimited).
In North America and some other countries, the default list separator is a comma, so you get CSV comma delimited. In European countries, a comma is reserved for the decimal symbol, and the list separator is generally set to semicolon. That is why the result is CSV semicolon delimited.
How to change the field separator (delimiter) in Excel when saving as a CSV file In Microsoft Windows, click the Start button, and then click Control Panel. Open the dialog box for changing Regional and Language settings. In the dialog box, look for the List separator setting. Enter the desired list separator.
Separate data fields with a delimiter, usually a comma. This should be a single character. If you do not want to use a comma, you should choose something like a tab or a pipe (|) character.
delimiter specifies the character used to separate each field. The default is the comma ( , ). quotechar specifies the character used to surround fields that contain the delimiter character. The default is a double quote ( ).
The default delimiter for CSV files is the comma, but any symbol can be used as a CSV delimiter, for example, a horizontal tab. Microsoft Office Excel includes native support for the CSV format: Excel spreadsheets can be saved to a CSV file and their data can then be imported into UCMDB.
