nroff (short for new roff) is a text-formatting program on Unix and Unix-like operating systems. It produces output suitable for simple fixed-width printers and terminal windows. It is an integral part of the Unix help system, being used to format man pages for display.
Groff (GNU troff) is a typesetting system that reads plain text mixed with formatting commands and produces formatted output. Output may be PostScript or PDF, html, or ASCII/UTF8 for display at the terminal. Formatting commands may be either low-level typesetting requests (primitives) or macros from a supplied set.
Groff development of new features is active, and is an important part of free, open source, and UNIX derived operating systems such as Linux and 4.4BSD derivatives notably because troff macros are used to create man pages, the standard form of documentation on Unix and Unix-like systems.
groff (/ˈdʒiːrɒf/ JEE-roff) (also called GNU troff) is a typesetting system that creates formatted output when given plain text mixed with formatting commands. It is the GNU replacement for the troff and nroff text formatters, which were both developed from the original roff.
troff (/ˈtiːrɒf/), short for typesetter roff, is the major component of a document processing system developed by Bell Labs for the Unix operating system. troff and the related nroff were both developed from the original roff.
GNU troff reads an input file prepared by the user and outputs a formatted document suitable for publication or framing. The input consists of text, or words to be printed, and embedded commands (requests and escape sequences), which tell GNU troff how to format the output.
groffer command in Linux displays groff files and man pages on an X window system, tty, and several other document viewers. groff files files made by using groff command. Groff is typically used to create man pages. man page man page(manual page) is documentation of different commands available in Linux.
