IP MAC Binding, namely, ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) Binding, is used to bind network devices IP address to its MAC address. This will prevent ARP Spoofing and other ARP attacks by denying network access to a device with matching IP address in the Binding list, but unrecognized MAC address.
It allowed IT to see those Mac computers in the same window as all those Windows devices. The big advantage of binding for users was that it allowed them to have a consistent username and password on any device and when accessing any network resource.
Apple Open Directory is the LDAP directory service model implementation from Apple Inc.
The directory payload in a configuration profile can configure a single Mac, or automate hundreds of Mac computers, to bind to Active Directory.
Important features of BIND 9 include: TSIG, nsupdate, IPv6, RNDC (remote name daemon control), views, multiprocessor support, Response Rate Limiting (RRL), DNSSEC, and broad portability.
Just so were on the same page at the outset: Binding means connecting a devicein this case, a Mac computerto a central directory service such as Microsoft Active Directory. (Active Directory has been the most common, but there have certainly been others, including Apples own Open Directory.)
IP-to-MAC binding says that anytime someone asks for that hardware address, it will be given that IP address. And, usually, that this IP address will always have this MAC address. So, the IP-to-MAC binding is more of a security feature, while the DHCP reservation is more of a ease of use or convenience feature.
