Binding can be done by name or by position. 7.1. Bind by Name. A named bind is performed when the bind variables in the Python statement use the names of placeholders in the SQL or PL/SQL statement. 7.1. Bind by Position. Positional binding occurs when a list or tuple of bind values is passed to the execute() call.
Bind values are used in SQL / JDBC for various reasons. Among the most obvious ones are: Protection against SQL injection. Instead of inlining values possibly originating from user input, you bind those values to your prepared statement and let the JDBC driver / database take care of handling security aspects.
Bind variables allow the same SQL statement (cursor) to be reused repeatedly even though specific predicate values being referenced change from one execution to the next by masking the literal value thats changing each time. Then the SQL text is identical each time and requires only one (hard) parse.
Bind variables allow the database server to prepare the statement once and execute it multiple times without reparsing or reanalyzing it. Support for SQL bind variables - Dynatrace Docs Dynatrace Documentation database-services-classic s Dynatrace Documentation database-services-classic s
Bind variables are related to host variables. Host variables are defined in the host or caller, whereas bind variables accept values from the caller to SQL. In PL/SQL the distinction between bind and host variables disappears. Bind variables are variables you create in SQL*Plus and then reference in PL/SQL. If you create a bind variable in SQL*Plus, you can use the variable as you would a declared variable in your PL/SQL subprogram and then access the variable from SQL*Plus.
If you use literals, this works only if the values are identical. Conversely, if you use bind variables, Oracle creates the execution plan for the query with the placeholders and saves it like that. literal vs. bind variable Archives - Digital Innovation Blog - ZEISS ZEISS digital-innovation tag literal- ZEISS digital-innovation tag literal-
Output bind variables may appear in the RETURNING clause of a SELECT or as variables in a block of procedural code. Substitution variables may appear anywhere in the query. They are frequently used to ammend WHERE clauses with additional constraints and specify schemas or databases.
