You can use bind arguments in the WHERE clause, the VALUES clause, or the SET clause of any SQL statement, as long as the bind arguments are not used as Oracle identifiers (such as column names or table names), or key words. WHERE departmentname = :1;
Bind Variable Syntax In Sybase and MS SQL Server, bind variables are names preceeded by an @ sign. In PostgreSQL, bind variables are numbers preceeded by a $ sign. When using SQL Relay bind functions, to refer to an Oracle, Sybase or MS SQL Server bind variable, you should use its name without the preceeding colon.
To use bind variables, put one or more placeholders in the text of the SQL statement, then specify the variable (the value to be used) for each placeholder.
Bind values are used in SQL / JDBC for various reasons. Among the most obvious ones are: Protection against SQL injection. Instead of inlining values possibly originating from user input, you bind those values to your prepared statement and let the JDBC driver / database take care of handling security aspects.
You can assign a value to a variable in the following ways. With the assignment operator ( := ). By selecting or fetching values into it. By passing the variable as an OUT or IN OUT parameter to a subprogram (procedure or function) and then assigning the value inside the subprogram.
BIND can also be used to simply bind constant values to variables in order to increase readability.
The first benefit of binding variables is that Oracle will only need to parse the query once, regardless of how many times it is executed with different values. This change in a scripts methodology can be a tremendous performance booster.
You simply have to write a command which starts with keyword VARIABLE followed by the name of your bind variable which is completely user defined along with the data type and data width. Thats how we declare a bind variable in Oracle database.
