this is an example of one of the specular theyamp;#39;re plastic and they come in a variety of sizes this being one of our smallest ones as you can see it opens up so we can take a good look at the cervix but we donamp;#39;t open it immediately we gently insert it and what i tend to say is tell me if you need me to stop at any point come and take a look before i start i let you know that the speculumamp;#39;s going in now and iamp;#39;m probably at about the right space i begin to open it a little bit more and i ask you if youamp;#39;d like me to stop at any point i will do from there i can get a good idea of whether this is a healthy cervix or weamp;#39;ve got anything to worry about then i take this which is pretty flexible as you can see this is used to sample some of the cells get the right spot and turn it around five times one two three four five once thatamp;#39;s done the examination is usually done

An abnormal Pap test result rarely means cancer is present, especially in someone who has regular, annual Pap tests. An abnormal result means there are cells in the cervix that look unusual, which can be caused by yeast or bacterial infection, irritation, benign growths, hormonal changes, or pre-cancer.
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US): This is the most common abnormal Pap test finding. It means that some cells dont look completely normal, but its not clear if the changes are caused by HPV infection.
Inflammation of the cervix is common and usually does not mean there is a problem. If the Pap smear showed that the inflammation is severe, your doctor may want to find the cause, such as an infection. You may also need to have another Pap smear in six months to see if the inflammation has gone.
What are the different types of abnormal results? Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) Low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) High-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) Atypical squamous cells, cannot exclude HSIL (ASC-H) Atypical glandular cells (AGC)
Atypical squamous cells can be a sign of: HPV (human papillomavirus) infection. Benign (noncancerous) cellular changes. Cervical cysts or polyps.
High-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL): There are moderately or severely abnormal cervical cells that could become cancer in the future if not treated. Your health care provider will likely ask you to come back for a colposcopy.
Unlike conventional Pap smears, LBC involves collecting samples, usually with a small brush, and suspending them in a liquid medium. This technique, based on monolayer slide preparation, offers improved specimen quality and has outperformed traditional methods.
The main advantages of LBC cervical smears are reduced false positive and false negative results, even distribution of cells, and elimination of obscuring effects. The drawbacks include the need for adaptation period and the expense of the method.
Cervical Cytology: The study of cells taken from the cervix using a microscope. Also called a Pap test. Cervix: The lower, narrow end of the uterus at the top of the vagina. Colposcopy: Viewing of the cervix, vulva, or vagina under magnification with an instrument called a colposcope.
Is the Pap smear liquid-based cytology test painful? No, the test is not painful. Your doctor uses a speculum to widen the opening of the vagina and uses a cell scraper to scrape some cells of the cervix.
