Distress the Wood Letters Choose your accent colors for distressing. Once the letters are dry, take a dry paintbrush and place only a small amount of accent color paint on the brush. Lightly stroke the dry brush across the letters until each letter has the desired amount of distressing.
In preparing an engraving block, the boxwood log is sliced across the grain and the slices stored for a number of years in a dry place. They are then sawed into small pieces and the best of them glued together into rectangular plates and polished down on both sides until they are exactly type high.
The primary difference between them is that engraving is a physical process, and etching is a chemical process. An engraver uses sharp tools to cut lines directly into a surface, while an etcher burns lines into a surface with acid.
Post-Engraving Paint or Ink: For a highly controlled and uniform darkening, use acrylic paint or ink over the engraved area. This method is particularly useful for achieving a very dark or even black engraving.
Antiquing: This paint-like process is very simple yet effective if you want to just touch up your engraving and make it a bit darker in order for it to stand out. The jeweler simply rubs the antiquing formula over the engraving, and lets it fill in the carving.
Whichever you choose, branding irons are super easy to use you just need to heat up the brand and gently press it against your wood item. Finally, branding irons can be used on any type of wood, although the darker the wood the harder it will be to read the mark.
Other than Rub n Buff (paste) and Krylon (spray paint) methods, heres whats referred to as the flood method of color filling. I use this method almost exclusively. Using a quick dry enamel, cover the entire area of engraving with paint. No need to use a brush; youre just flooding the area with paint.
Make an engraved area on wood and MDF really stand out by using shoe polish to darken the engraved area. Caitlin is here with a quick tutorial to show you how easy it is to do this process and make your next engraving project POP!
