An access control list (ACL) is a list of access control entries (ACE). Each ACE in an ACL identifies a trustee and specifies the access rights allowed, denied, or audited for that trustee. The security descriptor for a securable object can contain two types of ACLs: a DACL and a SACL.
BIND is a nameserver service responsible for performing domain-name-to-IP conversion on Linux-based DNS servers. The BIND package provides the named service. It reads the configuration from the /etc/named and /etc/named. conf files.
Organizations can use access control lists (ACL) to secure data. One of the major reasons to use access control lists is to restrict unauthorized users from accessing business-sensitive information. It can also be used to control network traffic by limiting the number of users accessing files, systems, and information.
The BIND nameserver named server uses the /etc/named. conf file for configuration. All zone files are placed in the /var/named/ directory.
Why should I use Access Control Lists? The primary reason is to provide a basic level of security for the network. ACLs are not as complex and in depth of protection as stateful firewalls, but they do provide protection on higher speed interfaces where line rate speed is important and firewalls may be restrictive.
A zone file is a text file that describes a DNS zone . The BIND file format is the industry preferred zone file format and has been widely adopted by DNS server software. The format is defined in RFC 1035.
Access Control Lists (ACLs) are address match lists that can be set up and nicknamed for future use in allow-notify , allow-query , allow-query-on , allow-recursion , blackhole , allow-transfer , match-clients , etc.
If you have installed the bind-chroot package, the BIND service will run in the /var/named/chroot environment. All configuration files will be moved there. As such, you can find the zone files in /var/named/chroot/var/named. Each zone file may contain directives and resource records.
The named-checkzone command checks the syntax and integrity of a zone file. It performs the same checks as the named daemon does when loading a zone. This makes the named-checkzone command useful for checking zone files before configuring them into a name server.
The answer is DNS is mostly UDP Port 53, but as time progresses, DNS will rely on TCP Port 53 more heavily.
