A. Generally, you will receive your EIN immediately when applying online. When paper or faxed Forms SS-4 are submitted with missing information it will delay the issuance of your Employer Identification Number.
Theres no way to update the name associated with your EIN electronically. Theres also no official form, so youll need to write a letter. Fortunately, changing the name of your business for your EIN is free and simple, even without a way to do it online.
Normally, when you are forming a business, you will need to apply for a new EIN but in special scenarios for LLCs and partnerships; you can transfer EIN and use it.
Use Form 8822-B to report changes to your responsible party, address or location. Changes in responsible parties must be reported to the IRS within 60 days. File only one Form SS-4.
Identify the information that has changed (LLC name, removal or addition of owners, address/location of the LLC). All other changes should be mailed to the IRS based on the state the entitys principal business, office or agency is located. The IRS will send a letter confirming receipt of your updated information.
International applicants may call 267-941-1099 (not a toll-free number) 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. (Eastern Time) Monday through Friday to obtain their EIN. The person making the call must be authorized to receive the EIN and answer questions concerning the Form SS-4, Application for Employer Identification Number PDF.
If you made a mistake on your EIN application, such as if you listed a non-owner or officer in Item 3 or elsewhere, do not submit a new EIN application, Form SS-4. Instead, submit a letter to the IRS, preferably on your company letterhead.
