Simply changing your name does not require a new EIN number. To update your EIN, mail a signed letter to the IRS at the address you file your return with. If you are a partnership or corporation, you must attach a copy of your formal name change document from the state.
The unique prefixes (20, 26, 27, 45, 46, 47, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 92, 93, 99) identify the EIN as a number issued via the internet.
An employer identification number (EIN) is a nine-digit number assigned by the IRS. Its used to identify the tax accounts of employers and certain others who have no employees. The IRS uses the number to identify taxpayers who are required to file various business tax returns.
To update EIN business address records, write a letter to the IRS, preferably on company letterhead, providing the name and Taxpayer Identification Number of the current principal officer, general partner, grantor, owner or trustor. If you are correcting an address, be sure to include the correct address currently
The IRS cannot cancel your EIN. Once an EIN has been assigned to a business entity, it becomes the permanent Federal taxpayer identification number for that entity. Regardless of whether the EIN is ever used to file Federal tax returns, the EIN is never reused or reassigned to another business entity.
Unless the applicant is a government entity, the responsible party must be an individual, not an entity. If there is more than one responsible party, the entity may list whichever party the entity wants the IRS to recognize as the responsible party. EINs are to be used strictly for tax administration purposes.
Dont submit a new application if you made a mistake on your original EIN form. Instead, send a letter to the IRS explaining the error and providing the correct information. This letter should be signed by an authorized representative of your company and include your current EIN.
