An overlaid Xref does not load or bring with it any nested xrefs when the base drawing is referenced into a new drawing. An attached Xref is fully attached to the base drawing and will carry through as that drawing is then referenced into other drawings.
Binding is not possible for PDFs or raster images, therefore the option is missing in the right-click menu of such reference types.
The two methods of binding xrefs to the current drawing are Bind and Insert. Bind alters the definition table names of an xref when it is inserted. Insert does not alter the definition table names of an xref when it is inserted. To bind a nested xref, you must also select the parent xref.
Xrefs are versatile and easy to use for different DWG types, whether they contain a single object or a complete design. Updates to the external drawing appear automatically in the host drawing when the drawing is opened, and notification of updates is provided during the host drawing session.
To Bind an Xref to the Current Drawing Click Insert tab Reference panel Dialog box launcher. Find. In the External References palette, select the reference name that you want to bind. Right-click, and click Bind. In the Bind Xrefs dialog box, select one of the following options: Click OK to close each dialog box.
Binding an xref to a drawing makes the xref a permanent part of the drawing and no longer an externally referenced file. You can bind the entire database of the xref drawing, including all its xref-dependent named objects (blocks, dimension styles, layers, linetypes, and text styles), by using the XREF Bind option.
