By default most LaTeX documents will indent the first line of the paragraph. The amount of space it indents it by can be controlled using the \parindent command, e.g. Notice that, somewhat unusually, the arguments to these commands dont go inside curly brackets.
You can avoid indentation by setting \parindent to 0pt (or 0mm, 0cm etc) or using the command \noindent at the beginning of the paragraph.
To indent subsequent lines of a paragraph, use the TeX command \hangindent . (While the default behaviour is to apply the hanging indent after the first line, this may be changed with the \hangafter command.) An example follows. \hangindent=0.7cm This paragraph has an extra indentation at the left.
The Plain TeX (and LaTeX) commands \indent and \noindent are defined in ConTeXt, but are not hooked into the indentation mechanism. Now, if we want to indent after an itemize, starting the next paragraph with \indent does not work; to get indentation we have to say \indentation.
First-line indent by default Put the cursor anywhere in the paragraph. On the Home tab, right-click the Normal style, and choose Modify. Select Format, and then choose Paragraph. On the Indents and Spacing tab, under Indentation, select First line. Select OK. Select OK again.
LaTeX will automatically indent the first line of each paragraph that doesnt immediately follow a section heading. If youd like to get rid of an indent, you can use the \noindent command: \section{Introduction} This is the first paragraph.
