Preparing a book proposal for submission to a publisher or an agent requires you write a Table of Contents (TOC). This should be an outline of the book concept you plan to propose.
The table of contents is usually located within the first few pages of the book after the title and copyright pages. It outlines the sections contained in the book and the order that they appear in. Each section will typically have a chapter title and corresponding page numbers.
Your book proposals table of contents should contain the following sections: Overview. Marketing. Promotion. Competing Books. About the Author. List of Chapters. Chapter-by-chapter Summaries. Sample Chapters.
Single space. Dont put spaces between paragraphs unless youre deliberately drawing emphasis or flagging a change of point of view, topic, or time period etc. Spaces between grafs will look like a blog not a published book. They also make it harder for the reader to get into the flow of the story.
Annotated table of contents Annotated table of contents Provide a chapter outline, including a descriptive paragraph on the key points, themes, and arguments of the material to be covered in the chapter. Sources This need not be comprehensive but say what kinds of archival documents, oral histories, collections, etc.
Around 15-50 pages long, a book proposal includes an overview of your book, your author bio, comparable titles, potential marketing strategies, a chapter outline, as well as some sample chapters, and a table of contents. Its not a complete manuscript, but instead a chance to gain a publishers interest in your book.
The synopsis in a book proposal is more than a summary of plot points or an outline of subjects to be covered. Its a convincing argument that the reader (editor, agent) needs and wants the story or argument you have to share in your memoir or non-fiction book manuscript.
What a book proposal should contain 1) Header. 2) A brief synopsis of the book. 3) Longer synopsis of the book, if you feel it is necessary. 4) Chapter breakdown. 5) Sample chapter (some editors will not require this) 6) Book details. 7) About the author/biography. 8) Platform/audience.
