The standard choice is 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 depending on how wide you want your finished binding to look. They are both attached in the same way. Consider the thickness or loft of your quilt as this will affect the finished look of the binding. I like a narrow look so I chose 2 1/4.
2.25- my personal preference- it results in binding being relatively even in width on oth the front and back of the quilt. 2.5- a good starting point for beginners as its easy to wrap the fabric around the quilt but the back binding ends up wider than the front.
Cut your Fabric Strips Most quilters I know cut their binding strips at 2 1/4 inches wide, but I know folks who go as narrow as 2 inches or as wide as 2 1/2. You want the binding to fit snugly around the edge of the quilt without pulling on either the front or the back too much.

To start, I attach the binding strip to the back of the quilt, instead of the front, matching the raw edge of the quilt and the binding together. Using a quarter-inch seam allowance, I start sewing on the binding at the halfway point on one of the sides, leaving an 8-inch binding tail (above).
Divide the total perimeter by the usable width of the binding fabric for most fabrics thats 40, but for extra-wides it could be up to 104 and round up to a whole number; this is the number of strips youll need to cut. Now multiply the number of strips by 2 to get the quantity of fabric you need off the bolt.
Using 14 to 13 or 12 to 23 of the block size can be used to determine border width. Yes, there are different opinions regarding the widths and proportions. An example is a quilt using 12 blocksthe border can be either 3, 4, 6, or 9.
