You can use bind arguments in the WHERE clause, the VALUES clause, or the SET clause of any SQL statement, as long as the bind arguments are not used as Oracle identifiers (such as column names or table names), or key words. WHERE departmentname = :1;
To use a bind variable in SQL Server, you use the @ symbol before the variable name. Using our sample query for cases, it would look like this: SELECT caseid, casename, casestatus, createddate FROM submittedcases WHERE assignedtoid = @userid; The userid is provided when the query is run.
When using bind variables, Oracle Database may be able to reuse the statement execution plan and context. Bind variables can be used to substitute data, but cannot be used to substitute the text of the statement. You cannot, for example, use a bind variable where a column name or a table name is required.
The CONNECT BY clause should contain one or more expressions similar to those used in joins. Specifically, a column in the current level of the table should refer to a column in the prior (higher) level of the table. For example, in a manager/employee hierarchy, the clause might look similar to:
DECLARE vInitCnt NUMBER(10):=1; vTotCnt NUMBER(10); BEGIN SELECT COUNT(*) INTO vTotCnt FROM DIMDATE; WHILE(vInitCnt
To use bind variables, put one or more placeholders in the text of the SQL statement, then specify the variable (the value to be used) for each placeholder.
The first benefit of binding variables is that Oracle will only need to parse the query once, regardless of how many times it is executed with different values. This change in a scripts methodology can be a tremendous performance booster.
