Simple Authentication and Security Layer (SASL) is a framework for authentication and data security in Internet protocols. It decouples authentication mechanisms from application protocols, in theory allowing any authentication mechanism supported by SASL to be used in any application protocol that uses SASL.
A simple LDAP bind, in which credentials are transferred over the network in cleartext, which isnt secure. An unsigned Simple Authentication and Security Layer (SASL) LDAP bind, which does not require signing and is unsecure. A signed SASL LDAP bind, which requires signing and is secure.
SASL uses two important identifiers for users. The authentication ID (authid) is the user ID for authenticating the user. The authentication ID grants the user access to a system. The authorization ID (userid) is used to check whether the user is allowed to use a particular option.
SASL authentication consists of the client and the server exchanging SASL messages embedded inside LDAP bind requests and responses. The bind request contains a name field, which is the DN of the directory object that the client wishes to authenticate as.
Loosely speaking, SSL is mostly associated with encrypting the connection, SASL with authenticating the connection, and of course AMQP carries the actual messaging protocol were really interested in. However despite common knowledge, actually SSL and SASL can both do encryption and authentication of the connection.
A BIND request is sent from the application program (which acts as the PLU) to the SLU to establish a session. The BIND includes the session parameters which define the protocols to be used on the session.
Bind operations are used to authenticate clients (and the users or applications behind them) to the directory server, to establish an authorization identity that will be used for subsequent operations processed on that connection, and to specify the LDAP protocol version that the client will use.
