Add Bates Numbers to a PDF. Open the file. Click Tools. Select Edit PDF. Choose More. Click Bates Numbering and Add. Select Output Options to customize the serial numbers. Click OK.
Bates Numbering, also known as Bates Stamping, is an indexing method used for legal, business and medical documents (PDFs in most cases). Bates Numbers are perceived as digital reference points used to uniquely identify and label each page in a set of documents.
Insert Page Numbers in a PDF To do so, go to the Tools menu and click Edit PDF if editing is not enabled. Then, in the toolbar, click Header Footer then Add to add a header or footer to the document to display the page numbers. Click the header or footer where you want the page numbers.
Acrobat makes it easy to insert bates numbers and sequentially number legal documents and other pdf files. Once you open up the bate numbering function, you will have the option to select and choose one PDF file or an entire collection of PDFs to be numbered and arrange them in any order you prefer.
You cannot edit Bates page numbering after youve added it to a document. You can, however, delete Bates numbering and apply a different Bates numbering formula. For more information on applying Bates numbering and working with other legal features in Acrobat, see docHub Pro Help.
The short answer is no - legal professionals still use bates numbering - but documents and discoverable information have become overwhelmingly electronic. One thing to keep in mind is that native document productions usually can not include a physical bates stamp without first being imaged.
It gained its name from the Bates Automatic Numbering-Machine, patented in the 1890s by Edwin G. Bates. This sequential-numbering stamp was used to manually mark each page in a record.
The Bates-stamp, or bates numbering has been around for a long time: Edwin G. Bates patented his device for applying consecutive numerical stamps to documents in 1892. In the old days, Bates-stamping documents required a person to literally stamp each page of the set of documents to be produced.
For easier identification and faster searching in large sets of files, you can specify Bates numbering as one of the available Format options. Choose Edit Insert Page Numbers Choose Bates Numbering in the Format option. Choose other options, as described in the above section. Click Insert.
Bates numbering (also known as Bates stamping, Bates branding, Bates coding or Bates labeling) is a method of sequentially numbering pages with a reference number. A hand-operated Bates numbering device is used to stamp a number on a page, and the numbers will automatically advance after each stamping.
