Inserting a cross reference: Go to References, then click Cross-reference. Change the Reference type dropdown to Footnote and leave the Insert as hyperlink box checked. Select the footnote you are referring back to from the list of all the footnotes in the document (For which footnote) and click Insert.
Choose Type Document Footnote Options. In the Numbering And Formatting tab, select options that determine the numbering scheme and formatting appearance of the reference number and footnote text. Click the Layout tab, and select options that control the look of the footnote section on the page. Click OK.
Create footnotes Place the insertion point where you want the footnote reference number to appear. Choose Type Insert Footnote. Type the footnote text.
If you add, delete, or move a cross-referenced footnote or endnote, you must update the cross-reference number. Hold down CONTROL , click the cross-reference number, and then click Update Field on the shortcut menu. Word updates cross-references automatically when you print.

A footnote consists of two linked parts: the footnote reference number that appears in text, and the footnote text that appears at the bottom of the column. You can create footnotes or import them from Word or RTF documents. Footnotes are automatically numbered as they are added to a document.
One-step footnotes Place your cursor in the text and right-click. Select Insert Footnote and type your footnote text. A reference number is placed in the text and your footnote appears at the bottom of the text frame.
Insert footnotes and endnotes Click where you want to reference to the footnote or endnote. On the References tab, select Insert Footnote or Insert Endnote. Enter what you want in the footnote or endnote. Return to your place in the document by double-clicking the number or symbol at the beginning of the note.
When you want to automatically update the supra reference numbers, do this: Click your cursor anywhere inside the footnote fields. Hit Ctrl A. Hit F9.
Towards the bottom of the dialog box, where it says Numbering, click on the dropdown. Options include Continuous, Restart each section or Restart each page. If you want to change the footnote numbering so that on each page they start with 1, click Restart each page. Click Apply.
