You may be able to obtain a copy of the original birth certificate by filing a petition under California Health and Safety Code Section 102705 in the clerks office of the county superior court where you reside (if you live in California), or the county where the adoption was finalized.
If you know the name of your adoption agency you can access your adoption records by writing to them to ask for access to the information they hold. Normally they will make an appointment with you to see an adoption advisor to go through the information with you.
An adoption certificate is issued to an adopted person once the court has arranged the adoption. It becomes the document that proves the identity of that person and effectively replaces their original birth certificate.
4. Are adoption records for California publicly available? The answer is no. California is one of 24 states with closed adoption records. That means records are sealed to the public, though there are ways that some non-identifying information can be sought by adult adoptees.
You may be able to obtain a copy of the adoption record that is maintained by the superior court by filing a petition, under California Family Code 9200, in the clerks office of the county superior court where the adoption was finalized.
A new birth certificate is then produced in the childs adoptive name. This document is known as an adoption certificate and replaces the original birth certificate for all legal purposes.
