Changing the Way Footnotes Are Numbered Make sure the References tab is selected on the ribbon. Click the small downward-pointing arrow at the lower-right corner of the Footnotes group. Make sure the Footnotes radio button is selected. Change the Start At value to reflect where you want Word to start numbering.
If more than one footnote begins on a page, the sequence of symbols is * . Shouldmore than four such notes appear on the same page, the symbols are doubled for the fifth to the eighth notes: ** . See also 3.77 .
Go to the References tab and click on Show Notes. In the new window that appears below, open the drop-down menu labeled Footnotes and choose Footnote Separator. Now you can highlight the separator in the textbox below and align it to the right just like normal text.
The footnote contains the number of the citation followed by a period and then the citation itself. The citation always includes the authors name and the title of the text, and it always ends with a period. Full notes also include all the relevant publication information in parentheses (which varies by source type).
Each footnote should appear at the bottom of the page that includes its numbered in-text reference. For note numbers in the text, use superscript. Indent the first line of each note half an inch like a paragraph in the main text. Use a short line (or rule) to separate footnotes from the main text.

In your document, click where you want to insert the note reference mark. On the Insert menu, click Footnote. Under Location, click Footnotes or Endnotes, and then on the Footnotes or Endnotes pop-up menu, click the location that you want. Under Format, select the numbering options that you want, and then click Insert.

Click where you want to reference to the footnote or endnote. On the References tab, select Insert Footnote or Insert Endnote. Enter what you want in the footnote or endnote. Return to your place in the document by double-clicking the number or symbol at the beginning of the note.
Use the Footnotes pull-down menu and select Footnotes Separator. Then Right Click on the bar and choose Paragraph from the contextual menu that displays. Check/adjust the Spacing Before and After settings for the Footnote Separator in this dialog where I have highlighted.
