When you could send it: One month after your interview, whether youre placed on the waitlist or havent yet heard back. You may send a second letter of intent if over two months have passed since your initial one and you have meaningful updates to share.
Whom should I address the letter of intent to? Using To Whom It May Concern is never a great idea. Also avoid sending a letter of intent to the entire admissions committee or to your interviewer(s). Instead, your letter of intent should ideally be addressed to the Dean of Admissions or Director of Admissions.
It is best to send a letter of intent after you have had your interview with your first choice of school, and have completed the majority of your interviews with other medical schools. This way, you can be sure your #1 choice is still at the top of your list.
The reason you must wait a bit into the cycle is to show that you have given this serious consideration. So, be sure to only send such a letter after youve interviewed (and dont send a letter if youve not been invited to an interview).
Update letters disclose updates on achievements, awards, and endeavors to the admissions committee, whereas. A letter of interest or a letter of intent (LOIs) reaffirm and strengthen your interest in the school. These letters should explain why you want an interview or acceptance at that particular medical school.
Ideally, you will want to ask for recommendation letters no later than two to three months before you plan on submitting your primary application (i.e., AMCAS). Therefore, if you plan to submit AMCAS in June, you should ask no later than the beginning of May.
How To Write a Letter of Intent Address the letter to the dean or director of admissions. Introduce yourself and get straight to the point. Explain why the school is your top choice and why you would be a good fit. Update them on any recent accomplishments that might not be in their file. Cleanly close the letter.
Whats the Difference Between the Two Letters? While both letters express your level of interest in your school of choice, the main difference between the letter of intent and letter of interest is the level of commitment.
