The paleontology and geochemical field work in the southern Bighorn Basin is focused on studying the PETM, a period of rapid climate change starting around 55.8 million years ago. This event saw extreme changes in ecosystems and geochemical cycles, with a dramatic temperature rise, carbon release, and significant climate change. The PETM is of interest to scientists as it serves as the best geological analog to present day global warming, with many studying it in the Western United States due to the large number of sedimentary deposits created by rivers during this time period.
