It is mainly used for manipulating the data of existing columns but cant change the definition of a table. The main difference between the two is that the ALTER Command adds, deletes, modifies, renames the attributes of the relation, and the UPDATE Command modifies the values of the records in the relations.
The ALTER COLUMN command is used to change the data type of a column in a table.
In Object Explorer, right-click the table with columns for which you want to change the scale and select Design. Select the column for which you want to modify the data type. In the Column Properties tab, select the grid cell for the Data Type property and choose a new data type from the drop-down list.
To change the data type of a column in a table, use the following syntax: SQL Server / MS Access: ALTER TABLE tablename. ALTER COLUMN columnname datatype; My SQL / Oracle (prior version 10G): ALTER TABLE tablename. MODIFY COLUMN columnname datatype; Oracle 10G and later: ALTER TABLE tablename.
The UPDATE command in SQL is used to modify or change the existing records in a table. If we want to update a particular value, we use the WHERE clause along with the UPDATE clause. If you do not use the WHERE clause, all the rows will be affected.
If youd like to replace a substring with another string, simply use the REPLACE function. This function takes three arguments: The string to change (which in our case was a column). The substring to replace.
To modify column width: Position the mouse over the column line in the column heading so the cursor becomes a double arrow. Click and drag the mouse to increase or decrease the column width. Release the mouse. The column width will be changed.
To update data in a table, you need to: First, specify the table name that you want to change data in the UPDATE clause. Second, assign a new value for the column that you want to update. Third, specify which rows you want to update in the WHERE clause.
