To adopt a stepchild or a relative (like a niece, nephew or grandchild) living in Ontario, you can apply directly to an Ontario court for an adoption order. The Ontario court in your area will advise you on how to file an application for a relative adoption. Find an Ontario court. You may need a lawyer to assist you.
Go to the county of the adoption and contact the county clerk to learn the rules about obtaining information for a closed adoption. You may need to be the adopted person or be of a certain age to access records. Ask for a petition form. Fill out the petition form and file it with the county court to review.
Are adoption records for California publicly available? The answer is no. California is one of 24 states with closed adoption records. That means records are sealed to the public, though there are ways that some non-identifying information can be sought by adult adoptees.
There are two ways to access information about an adoption record: As a Freedom of Information request. Application for Service Pertaining to an Adopted Person Once adoptees are 19, they or their birth parents can apply for a copy of the adoption order or original B.C. birth registrations.
