hi im phil steele should you shoot your photos in the raw file format or the jpeg format now there are some photography teachers who would have you believe that you should always shoot raw and that jpegs are strictly for amateurs but nothing could be further from the truth the fact is there are some situations where raw is better and some situations where jpeg is better and its important that you understand the difference so in this video were going to look at the advantages and disadvantages of raw and jpeg well clearly define which situations call for which file type and will finally lay this old myth to rest [Music] i have a confession to make i shoot jpeg more often than i shoot raw now ing to some arrogant photography teachers out there this brands me as an amateur but the fact is most of the photography that i do is more suitable to jpegs the choice of raw or jpeg is less about your level of photography expertise than it is about the kind of photos youre taking and what you

A RAW file is the uncompressed and unprocessed image data captured by a digital camera or scanners sensors. Shooting in RAW captures a high level of image detail, with large file sizes and lossless quality.
If RAW files auto convert to JPG in Lightroom or other editing software, you are probably using Photos app for importing, which contains the compressed JPEG versions of image files. The pictures are shot in JPEG and not RAW. Your photo editing software is not updated or has a bug.
Convert your file Open the photos in RAW format, e.g. in Photoshop. Go to File and choose Save As and select from the list . jpg (it might appear as JPEG). Choose a compression between 90-100%, otherwise this leads to loss of quality.
Post-processing Higher image quality translates into more available data when it comes to photo editing, giving RAWs a definitive edge over JPEGs. Editing programs like docHub Camera RAW, Bridge, or Lightroom are built for fine-tuning RAWs into polished final photos.
RAW image files cannot actually be edited. Any changes to the file are saved as settings in a separate file and applied to the RAW image when the image is opened in its RAW editor. Because the RAW files cannot be altered they can sometimes be admissible in court as evidence.
Its because when you shoot in JPEG mode, your camera applies sharpening, contrast, color saturation, and all sorts of little tweaks to create a fully processed, good-looking final image.
The main advantage of shooting in RAW is that you end up with high-quality files to edit into the best possible image. Capturing and storing all the details that pass through your cameras sensors means RAW files contain a wider dynamic range and far greater color spectrum than JPEGs.
If you wish to make a quick edit or directly use the image for social media, go with JPEGs. If you wish to edit the same image seriously, use the RAW file. I hope next time you import an image to Lightroom, these experiments will encourage you to shoot and edit in RAW format.
To convert a RAW file to a JPEG image file, open your RAW file in your chosen editing software. From there, simply make a copy of the file, save and export it as a new JPEG image file. Youll then have two files the original RAW file and the converted JPEG image.
