hey guys this is Danny with Bona tech support today weamp;#39;re going to talk about job site prep prior to applying Bona drive fast stain uh every sanding job is different but we recommend standing between 80 and 120 grit product or applying stain after that another great tip is to use a halogen light to help see any visible or non-visible sanding marks that you might need to remove again prior to applying stain on your butt ends or end walls we recommend using a random orbital or a hand sander to help marry your sanding sequence that you used in the field after that we always recommend using the Bona Tampico brush on your buffer or Bona power drive to help remove fine talcum type sand from the from the fine grain after that tack and back to help clean that floor even further uh another thing that we always recommend is hanging clear plastic over Windows to help prevent any hot spots on your floor that will make that stain Flash and dry too quickly and then the final process as we al

For pieces where you have a dark finish and want to go lighter, you will need to remove the existing finish first. Then, determine what undertone your wood has and counteract it with an appropriate stain color. For pieces that are a light finish, and you want to go darker, you can simply apply a darker stain!
If a dye stain gets the wood too dark, try removing some of the dye by wiping it with solvent. The powder dyes labeled Lockwood and Moser (which are the same) are easier to lighten than the liquid dyes labeled NGR (non-grain-raising) or Transtint (which are also the same; Transtint is just concentrated).
Going darker is easy enoughjust add more stain. Too red? Minwaxs PolyShades is a tinted polyurethane that lets you change the tone by adding, say, brown, to balance it out. Its always best to build your color graduallythe one thing you cant do is go lighter.
Sand with the grain up to 220 or 340 grit. Dont bother with any higher. Apply a commercial sanding sealer or pre-stain conditioner in ance with the instructions, or a thin coat of dewaxed shellac. Apply a large amount of stain over the entire surface of the part, as quickly as you are able.
If you try to apply a light color of stain over the top of an existing dark finish, you wont notice much difference. To completely alter the color of the finish, strip down the existing stain using a petroleum-based solvent. Once youve lightened the wood, you may add a lighter color of stain.
Theres no stripping or heavy sanding necessary to remove the old finish! Simply give it a light sanding with fine-grit sandpaper, remove sanding dust, and brush on a coat of PolyShades (see step-by-step instructions provided in this Guide). Why change the color?
A color wheel helps dial in Colors opposite each other on the wheel are complementary colors. Mixing a color with its complement neutralizes (reduces the intensity of) the color. For example, if a stain is too red, add small amounts of green and watch the red change to a cooler brown.
Simply use a lint-free rag soaked in mineral spirits or paint thinner to rub the areas of over-applicationwherever the stain has puddled or is thick and stickyto remove the excess stain. Areas of over-application may be noticeable because the stain is darker. Start with light pressure (this may be all you need).
