During heart failure, the heart canamp;#39;t pump blood efficiently enough to meet the bodyamp;#39;s needs because either itamp;#39;s pumping ability has weakened, or because the lower left chamber has become thick, and no longer holds enough blood. Without proper pumping, fluid can build up and cause symptoms that everyone should learn to recognize. Swelling, also known as edema, is most often noticed in the feet, ankles, legs or abdomen. Sudden weight gain. People with heart failure can also track their weight to help manage any swelling. Generally, heart failure starts on the left side specifically, the left ventricle, your hearts main pumping chamber. Heart failure often occurs after another condition has weakened the heart. Any of the below conditions can weaken the heart and cause heart failure: Coronary artery disease and heart attack.
Although not all heart failure is congestive, the terms are often used interchangeably. Heart failure may either be left-sided, in which pulmonary edema is the main symptom, or right-sided, in which hepatomegaly or liver enlargement and systemic edema are the main symptoms.
Left sided heart failure has several treatments: Lifestyle strategies and changes: Eating a low salt diet with plenty of vegetables and fruits, getting regular physical activity, and avoiding alcohol and smoking can help manage heart health.
Left-sided CHF is the most common form of CHF and begins when the left ventricle cannot effectively pump blood throughout the body. Eventually, this can lead to fluid retention, particularly around the lungs. Common symptoms include swelling, trouble breathing, and coughing.
What are the symptoms of right-sided heart failure? shortness of breath, especially when lying flat. coughing. dizziness. difficulty concentrating and confusion. fatigue and low energy. sudden weight gain. reduced appetite. upset stomach.
When the right side of the heart weakens, blood coming in from the veins can start to back up. This is called right-sided heart failure, which usually results in edema in the lower extremities.
Left-sided heart failure is caused by conditions that weaken or stiffen the muscle of the left ventricle, or that obstruct or overload blood flow through the left ventricle. The most common causes of left-sided heart failure include: High blood pressure (hypertension) Coronary artery disease and heart attacks.
If you have right-sided heart failure, your doctor may prescribe two types of medicines. Medicines that remove extra sodium and fluid from your body, including diuretics and aldosterone antagonists (such as spironolactone) lower the amount of blood that the heart must pump.
