XPS is routinely used to analyze inorganic compounds, metal alloys, polymers, elements, catalysts, glasses, ceramics, paints, papers, inks, woods, plant parts, make-up, teeth, bones, medical implants, bio-materials, coatings, viscous oils, glues, ion-modified materials and many others.
In general, it is known that for most materials, when the XPS peak becomes higher shift, it means strong bonding with oxidation, and conversely, when the electron concentration increases, it is known that it is referred to as lower shift.
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), also known as electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), is a technique for analyzing a materials surface chemistry. XPS can measure elemental composition as well as the chemical and electronic state of the atoms within a material.
The samples that can be analyzed by XPS are all solids ranging from films, powders to frozen liquids including inorganic compounds, metal alloys, semiconductors, polymers, elements, catalysts, glasses, ceramics, paints, papers, inks, woods, plant parts, makeup, teeth, bones, medical implants, bio-materials, viscous
The XPS binding energy of an atom is a measure of the electronic environment of the atom. Decreasing the electron density of an atom (such as a C-O bond compared with a C-C bond) increases the binding energy of the atom.
XPS Spectroscopy can detect and quantify all elements except for H and He and provide chemical state information, making it a powerful survey analysis technique.
XPS is used to characterize the surfaces of diverse materials such as inorganic compounds (minerals), semiconductors, organic compounds, and thin films and coatings on natural and engineered materials.
XPS Sample Preparation: Press the powder into clean, high purity indium foil. Dissolve the powder in a suitable solvent and then drop cast onto the surface of a clean silicon wafer. Sprinkle the powder onto the surface of sticky carbon conductive tape or pressed into a tablet for analysis.
