A vinyl record is played by rotating the record so that an approximately circular groove in the vinyl slides under a stylus. Bumps in the groove run into the stylus, causing it to oscillate.
The size is the most notable difference in the performance of 78 shellac records and 33 or 45 vinyl records. The 45s are typically 7 inches, but 78s and 33s can be either 10 or 12 inches.
If you find that the pitch is even subtly off, this is a sign that your record player is running slow and needs a quick fix. While comparing your record playback to digital formatted music is a great way to identify a slow running record player, there is only so much that the ears can pick up on.
33 vs 45 Vinyl (in short) The 45 RPM record size version is far more popular with DJs. This is because 45s travel faster than the 33 record size format. They are larger thus allowing for more waveforms to be squeezed into the format. More space givrs 45 more bumps and grooves which equates to a superior audio quality.
The size is the most notable difference in the performance of 78 shellac records and 33 or 45 vinyl records. The 45s are typically 7 inches, but 78s and 33s can be either 10 or 12 inches. What differences should you be aware of when deciding which record you want to play on your turntable?
Relative to a person looking down at the turntable from above, the turntable turns clockwise.
Generally, 12-inch vinyl records run at 33 RPM while records that are 7 inches operate at 45 RPM. This can easily be found via the central label. This isnt a perfect method, however. If you have a record that is a 12-inch single, as opposed to an LP, the speed is more than likely going to run at 45 RPM.
Pitch adjustment is important because it determines how your records are going to sound. Too fast, and everything will sound rushed and higher in frequency. In extreme cases, if your pitch is way too fast it may be unlistenable, because it is too ridiculously off the mark.
Adjusting Pitch If You Have A Built-In Strobe As the record spins slowly move your slider (or knob) and watch the lights hitting the raised bumps on the edge of the platter. Watch for the lights to create straight lines. The lines should not move left or right. They should be completely still.
A variable speed pitch control (or vari-speed) is a control on an audio device such as a turntable, tape recorder, or CD player that allows the operator to deviate from a standard speed (such as 33, 45 or even 78 rpm on a turntable), resulting in adjustments in pitch.
