Hi, this is Gary with MacMost.com. On todays episode lets talk about using the Quoting feature when replying to messages in Mail. So what is Quoting? Quoting is when you have an email message, like this one here, and you hit Reply and you can see in the message that you are composing that the previous message is included there and usually its indented or colored in some way. That is a quote. You are quoting what was in the previous message so that you can reply to it and your reply makes sense. But if you learn a few things you can make this feature even more useful. Lets go to Preferences in Mail first and look at some of the options youve got with Quoting. Under Composing here you can see there is a few things that have to do with responding. One is to turn on quotes which is this option here. Another is to increase the quote level. Some people like this and some people dont. If you are playing back and back forth and back and forth with somebody this will keep increasing it s

You can use an ellipsisthree consecutive periods, with one space around each ( . . . )to leave out extra or unnecessary words. The ellipsis represents information that you are omitting from a quotation.
Words can be added or changed to a quote by using brackets. Changes can be used to correct tense or to add necessary information. Brackets can also be used to make the pronouns in a quote consistent. However, brackets should not be used to change the meaning of the quote.
Yes. You may want to make minor changes to a direct quotation. This is possible (as long as you dont change the meaning), but you must follow the rules covered in Sections 8.308.31 of the APA Manual.
Sometimes information is missing or inaccurate in a quote. Words can be added or changed to a quote by using brackets. Changes can be used to correct tense or to add necessary information. Brackets can also be used to make the pronouns in a quote consistent.
How to Change the Existing Quotation Mark Style Press the Ctrl+H shortcut key to open the Find and Replace dialog box. Enter in both the Find what and Replace with boxes. Select Replace All to convert all quotation marks in the document to your preferred style.
Smart quotes in Word On the File tab, click Options. Click Proofing, and then click AutoCorrect Options. In the AutoCorrect dialog box, do the following: Click the AutoFormat As You Type tab, and under Replace as you type, select or clear the Straight quotes with smart quotes check box. Click OK.
Some punctuation marks at the end of a quotation may be changed to fit the syntax of the sentence in which the quotation appears, as long as meaning is not changed (e.g., it might alter meaning to change a period to a question mark, depending on how the sentence is written).
It is important to realize also that when you are using MLA or some other form of documentation, this punctuation rule may change. When quoting text with a spelling or grammar error, you should transcribe the error exactly in your own text.
When researching, you may find many instances of a quotation within a quotation (that is, the author you are quoting has quoted another author) in scholarly essays. In this case, you use the single quotation marks () for the quote within the quote.
When you write information or ideas from a source in your own words, cite the source by adding an in-text citation at the end of the paraphrased portion, like this: This is a paraphrase (Smith 8). This is a paraphrase (Trouble 22). Note: The period goes outside the brackets, at the end of your in-text citation.
