Whenever your vet wants to undertake a medical or surgical procedure on your pet, they will need your consent. When you give permission for your pet to undergo a medical or surgical procedure at the vets, or use a medication off-licence, your vet wants you to give your informed consent. This includes euthanasia.
Section 19 provides penalties for those who practice, or hold themselves out as practicing, veterinary surgery without having been enrolled by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons on their register.
Valid informed consent means that participants are able to give consent for their own participation or on behalf of their animals, i.e., they are able to understand, interpret and weigh the information and to make and convey a decision about their participation.
The purpose of the consent form is to record the clients agreement to treatment based on knowledge of what is involved and the likely consequences. The client may be the owner of the animal, someone acting with the authority of the owner, or someone with statutory or other appropriate authority.
Any person required to keep a record must retain that record for a period of five years, following the administration or other disposal of the product.
Informed consent is very important because it protects both you and the veterinary practice. Consent works like a contract between yourself, as the pet owner, and the surgery. A signed consent form is the most common way to document informed consent.
13.17 Records should be kept secure and confidential at all times and there should be adequate back-up in place if records are stored electronically. 13.18 The RCVS does not specify for how long clinical and client records should be retained and practices are free to set their own policies.
13.18 The RCVS does not specify for how long clinical and client records should be retained and practices are free to set their own policies. Practices should however comply with any professional indemnity policy conditions relating to retention of records.
