Writing Thesis Statements DONT be vague or mysterious. DO be as specific as possible about what your paper will argue. DONT list the topic of each body paragraph (unless the assignment instructs you to do so). DONT squish too many ideas into a single sentence. DO split up your sentence if it gets too long.
Introducing Quotations X states, [blank]. As X puts it, [blank]. ing to X, [blank]. X writes, [blank]. In her book/essay [blank], X maintains that [blank]. Writing in the journal [blank], X complains that [blank]. In Xs view, [blank]. X agrees when she writes, [blank].
The following general steps address how to properly integrate a quotation into an essay. Step 1: Introduce the Author of the Quotation. Step 2: State the Quotation. Step 3: Summarize the Quotation. Step 4: Analyze the Quotation. Step 5: State the Quotations Relevance to Your Argument.
There are three ways to introduce quotations or paraphrases: You can use a full sentence followed by a colon to introduce a quotation. You can use a lead-in naming the author or character, followed by a comma. You can also begin a sentence with your own words and complete it with quoted words.
Words can be added or changed to a quote by using brackets. Changes can be used to correct tense or to add necessary information.
The same type of quotation marks must be used for every embedded quotation. The other type can then be used for any quotations that appear within quoted material double marks within single ones or single marks within double and these, too, must be used consistently in every relevant instance.
Unfortunately, one of the rules of thesis writing is that you cant use quotes in it. Your thesis statement should reflect the points discussed in your paper as well as the stance you are taking, and its unlikely you can find a single quote that can do that.
Think of your proposal as a preliminary outline rather than a definitive summary of the final product. Make sure that you acknowledge the authors of all publications you reference in your proposal, to avoid any risk of plagiarism. You should paraphrase or use quotation marks where appropriate.
