Words can be added or changed to a quote by using brackets. Changes can be used to correct tense or to add necessary information. Brackets can also be used to make the pronouns in a quote consistent.
Paraphrasing is NOT copying the sentence and replacing or changing a few words to be different from the original. (This is called patchwriting and may trigger plagiarism-detecting programs.) You should paraphrase when the idea or point is more important than the actual words used.
If any incorrect spelling, punctuation, or grammar in the source might confuse readers, insert the word [sic], italicized and in brackets, immediately after the error in the quotation. Nowak (2019) wrote that people have an obligation to care for there [sic] pets (p. 52).
Paraphrase short sections of work only i.e. a sentence or two or a short paragraph: as an alternative to a direct quotation. to rewrite someone elses ideas without changing the meaning. to express someone elses ideas in your own words.
Substitutions, Additions, and Omissions in Quotations: Any such substitutions, additions or omissions should not result in quoting out of context where the meaning of the quote is changed. Brackets, also called square brackets, are used to show that the original quote has been modified.
Use double quotation marks () around a direct quote. A direct quote is a word- for-word report of what someone else said or wrote. You use the exact words and punctuation of the original. Harriet Jacobs writes, She sat down, quivering in every limb (61).
When you paraphrase, you recast someone elses words into an entirely new form. A good paraphrase doesnt simply substitute synonyms for the original words but substantially rewrites the passagewithout changing its meaning or emphasis.
When writers insert or alter words in a direct quotation, square brackets[ ]are placed around the change. The brackets, always used in pairs, enclose words intended to clarify meaning, provide a brief explanation, or to help integrate the quote into the writers sentence.
