The 1099 correction form is the same as the original form. You must use a regular copy of Form 1099 (either NEC or MISC) and mark the box next to CORRECTED at the top. Send corrected Forms 1099 to the IRS, contractor or vendor, and state agencies (if applicable).
Disputing a 1099 If you receive an erroneous 1099, your first move should be to contact the issuer and ask for a corrected form. Be prepared to provide the issuer with proof of your assertion. If the issuer agrees with you, it can then file a corrected 1099 with the IRS, and you can put the matter to rest.
Youll address the discrepancy on your tax return on line 21, or on a Schedule C. You will need to show the client reported an erroneous amount on your 1099 and attach a statement to explain the difference. In your statement, include the amount reported, the difference, and the correct amount.
Choose the specific business and the type of 1099 forms you need to correct. Select the bulk correction option and export the form information as an Excel file. Update the necessary corrected information within the Excel file. Upload the modified file back into the system.
There are two types of 1099 errors to be corrected. Type 1 only requires one Form 1099 to be filed to correct the error. Type 2 requires two 1099 forms to be filed to make the correction.
Taxpayers may need to file an amended return if they filed with missing or incorrect info. If they receive the missing or corrected Form W-2 or Form 1099-R after filing their return and the information differs from their previous estimate, they must file Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.
All businesses must submit a corrected 1099 form if they make an error on their original form. The IRS will issue some penalty depending on the type of error and whether it was intentional. A business generally must pay $100 per incident.
If theres a mistake, call the client immediately and request a corrected Form 1099. If the 1099 has been filed with the IRS, ask the client to send the IRS a corrected 1099. You dont want the IRS to think you were paid more than you really owe.
