Multiple-choice test research Study after study shows that when you change your answer in a multiple-choice test, you are more likely to be changing it from wrong to right than right to wrong. So actually sticking with your first answer is, on average, the wrong strategy.
Our advice to students, based on the present study as well as past research, is straightforward: Review your answers before turning in your test. If you think your initial answer is wrong, and another response is correct, change your answer!
More than seventy years of research on answer changing shows that most answer changes are from wrong to right, and that most people who change their answers on a test improve their scores. This is true regardless of the type of test involved: multiple-choice or true-false, timed or not.
In the simplest scenario, rephrasing a question as a statement is as easy as removing the question words. Consider the example of Why did the chicken cross the road? All you need to do is remove the question words: why did. After that, youre left with: The chicken crossed the road.
The reasons for why we tend to stick with our initial answers is that the feeling of regret we experience when changing from an initially correct to an incorrect answer is unbearable and we tend to remember these salient instances better than instances where we changed an answer to a correct one.
There are five basic types of questions: factual, convergent, divergent, evaluative and combination.

Because the data clearly shows that by going back and changing some of your answers. You will stand the highest probability. Of getting a better grade.
So, what should you do? Should you change your answer or keep the initial answer you put down? Well, statistically, you should change your answer if you are unsure of the first answer because you are three times more likely to get the answer right if you do change (Merritt, 2009).
