Carbon satellites in physics and spectroscopy, are small peaks that can be seen shouldering the main peaks in the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrum.
In general, the Peak-Width (FWHM) of principal key XPS signals decreases from ~ 2.0 eV to ~1.0 eV as the Pass Energy (PE) is decreased from a large value (150-200 eV) to a smaller value (50-90 eV).
The shifts in the XPS peak is related to its oxidation state and higher shift in binding energy corresponds to higher oxidation state. Some times more shift with noise peak is related to the satellite peak or shake up and it is a case for only some metal or its oxide for example Ni or NiO.
However, the XPS spectra shows the carbon peak (1s) at ~ 285 ev (Binding energy). Measurements were performed on cut-pieces of thickness ~1-2 mm. Some research papers report the formation of carbonous layer on glass surfaces when fractured in air.
The X-Axis: Peak Position In XPS analysis, the position of a peak on the x-axis indicates the elemental and chemical composition. This axis is traditionally displayed as “Binding Energy” in electron volts (eV).
Deconvolution has also been examined as a means to remove backgrounds from XPS spectra over wide energy ranges, up to 100 eV.
Basically, two different x ray sources are used in xps to distinguish Auger peaks from photo electron peaks. An Auger peak represents the kinetic energy of an auger electron which changes with the energy of primary xrays.
The X-Axis: Peak Position In XPS analysis, the position of a peak on the x-axis indicates the elemental and chemical composition. This axis is traditionally displayed as “Binding Energy” in electron volts (eV).
The peak-shape of pure metals and elements use a 50:50 Gaussian:Lorentzian peak-shape ratio for peaks in the >700 eV range. The Voigt peak-shape is an alternative peak-shape that may provide a smaller Chi-square and slightly smaller FWHM that the Gaussian-Lorentzian Sum peak-shape.
XPS can measure elemental composition as well as the chemical and electronic state of the atoms within a material. XPS spectra are obtained by irradiating a solid surface with a beam of X-rays and measuring the kinetic energy of electrons that are emitted from the top 1-10 nm of the material.
