AFP is measured in nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL). An AFP level between 0 ng/mL to 40 ng/mL is normal for adults. An extremely high level of AFP in your blood—greater than 400 ng/mL—could be a sign of liver tumors.
Lower than normal AFP levels may mean your baby has a genetic disorder such as Down syndrome, a genetic disorder that causes intellectual disabilities and health problems.
Normal and Critical Findings Between 15 and 20 weeks, AFP levels usually range between 10 ng/ml to 150 ng/ml. Adult blood levels greater than 200 ng/ml in patients with liver cirrhosis strongly indicate hepatocellular carcinoma.
A high level of AFP might mean that a patient has liver cancer. However, sometimes the AFP is high when there is active liver disease but no cancer. Usually, the AFP test needs to be interpreted by a doctor in combination with pictures of the liver taken with ultrasound or CT scan.
A positive test with a high AFP suggests a birth defect like spina bifida. That's typically a result of 2.5 times or more than the "average" level of AFP you'd expect to see at that point in your pregnancy. A positive test with low AFP could mean a problem like Down syndrome or Edwards syndrome.
The AFP concentration in maternal serum rises throughout pregnancy, from the nonpregnancy level of 0.2 ng/mL to about 250 ng/mL at 32 weeks gestation.
If your AFP test results are abnormal, your provider will order more tests to confirm the diagnosis. Higher than usual AFP levels can point to neural tube defects. Lower than usual AFP levels may indicate that the fetus has a genetic disorder such as Down syndrome.
The singleton pregnancy detection rates are 88% for anencephaly and 79% for open spina bifida (false-positive rate, 3%). Down syndrome risk is based on MoM values of all 5 markers and maternal age at time of delivery....Alpha Fetoprotein (AFP) Quad Screen, Penta Screen, Test Summary. What does it mean if my AFP PLUS test result is screen positive? A positive AFP PLUS test means that you are in a higher likelihood group for having a baby with a neural tube defect or a chromosome abnormality. However, it does not prove by itself that there is anything wrong with the pregnancy.
