How long does it take to recover from a torn ACL? It usually takes six to nine months to recover from a torn ACL. Competitive athletes may need a little longer than this to heal fully before theyre cleared to return to their sport. Your provider will tell you when you can resume physical activities.
How long does it take an ACL to heal without surgery? While each person is different, you may heal from a partial ACL tear within 3 months, especially if you undergo physical therapy to rebuild strength and function in your knee.
Delaying surgery beyond three months increases the risk of developing irreparable cartilage damage or meniscus injuries because of continual instability in the knee.
If you wait too long to fix a torn ACL and you start to get chronic ACL deficiency, the surgeon may not be able to fix all of your joint damage. You may still have pain and swelling even after surgery. Its important to have surgery before your unstable knee leads to other joint problems.
If your knee feels stable and you do not have an active lifestyle, you may decide not to have ACL surgery. But delaying surgery could cause further damage to your knee, if it gives way or becomes unstable.
