A pattern can be altered and adjusted three ways: By folding out excess fullness to make an area smaller. By slashing and spreading or overlapping along pattern lines to increase or decrease dimensions. By redrawing darts or seamlines.
The grainline usually runs vertically through a pattern, although in some cases it will run horizontally or even diagonally (bias cut patterns). I like to use arrows to indicate the top and bottom of the pattern - this can help when you have a directional print or a pattern piece that is an unconventional shape.
The actual step-by-step process of adjusting a pattern is pretty simple - it involves cutting the pattern pieces horizontally (sometimes in more than one place), and then adding more paper in between (to add length), or overlapping the pieces (to remove length).
Adjustment line: This line indicates where a pattern can be lengthened and shortened.
If you are in the 18-26 size range, add 5 to your upper bust measurement. This will determine what size you would make if you were a DD cup. The difference between your actual bust measurement and the size you are cutting is the amount your pattern will need to be adjusted. This is your bust differential measurement.
Stitching lines are not generally found on multi-sized patterns but on single-sized patterns they are represented by dotted lines. Generally, there is no need to transfer these lines onto your fabric.
Hemline: The hemline is a solid line near the lower edge (often 3 above the cutting line) and it indicates where to fold the hem so the garment is the length indicated on the pattern envelope.
Pattern markings for constructing your garment are there to indicate how the pattern pieces sew together. They can show how to distribute ease, create darts, where to gather and even which part of the garment you are working with.
