PAP is more susceptible to cyberattacks than CHAP because it doesnt have the built-in safeguards that CHAP has. Specifically, CHAP doesnt transmit passwords, has an ongoing authentication mechanism, and uses an encrypted calculation to help each entity verify the identity of the other.
PAP, or password authentication protocol, is a point-to-point protocol (PPP) authentication method that uses passwords to validate users. It is an internet standard (RFC 1334), password-based authentication protocol. Using PAP, data is not encrypted. It is sent to the authentication server as plain text.
Password-based authentication is a method that requires the user to enter their credentials username and password in order to confirm their identity. Once credentials are entered, they are compared against the stored credentials in the systems database, and the user is only granted access if the credentials match.
Setting Up PAP Authentication (Task Maps) Gather preconfiguration information. Collect user names and other data that is needed for authentication. Update the password database, if necessary. Ensure that all potential callers are in the servers password database. Create the PAP database. Modify the PPP configuration files.
