If your theme is the erosion of ethics and morality, some examples of motifs might be things like clothes that become more and more tattered, or a garden that slowly falls into ruin. You can use physical objects as a motif or a more abstract idea, like decay.
Pick a short 4 or 5 note rhythm in one or two measures. Repeat, ad lib changing notes and the rhythm throughout chord changes such as a simple 12 bar blues. Stick with the basic idea but improvise with it - play with it as a song bird might. Thats the creation and use of a motif.
16 ways to manipulate a motif Repetition - repeat exactly the same. Retrograde - perform it backwards. Inversion - perform it upside-down. Size - condense or expand. Tempo - fast, slow, stop. Rhythm - Vary the rhythm but not the tempo. Quality - vary the movement quality, eg.
Motif development is the compositional procedure in which complete work or sections are based a thematic motif [42]. There are several ways for developing a motif. Some of the major ways to develop a motif are repetition, sequence, contrary motion, retrograde, augmentation and diminution, as Fig.
Motifs can be modified slightly throughout a song. They may be altered by changing their rhythm, their melody, their order (played backwards for example) or a mix of all three. Motifs can be composed, like in an opera or a symphony, or they can be improvised.
Motifs are recurring images, quotes, or concepts that take on a figurative or symbolic meaning throughout the story. Motifs are used to tie the readers into the story and to help them understand some of the important concepts in a given work. A motif will often come up again and again at important moments in a story.
Start by establishing a key and a chord progression. Next, improvise a melody using the notes in your chosen key and play around with the number of notes, their intervals, order and rhythm. If possible, record a few variations before choosing your favorite combination.
Motifs are recurring concepts that are used to reinforce themes. They can be thought of as smaller aspects of a theme but are more specific. Themes are broad, overarching lessons that the author is trying to instill in the reader. Themes are broader than motifs.
