Smear test top tips: How to make cervical screening more Time your appointment with your period. Wear comfortable clothes. Ask for a woman to do the test. Ask for a smaller speculum. Put the speculum in yourself. Ask to change position. Dont use lubricant. Use painkillers if necessary.
Typically, your doctor will use the Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP), or perform a cold knife cone biopsy as a minor surgical procedure. Be sure to always bring up any questions you may about you Pap test with your gynecologist.
To do a Pap test, your doctor will push apart the walls of your vagina using a device that looks like a duck beak (called a speculum). Then, he or she will use a small tool to collect cells from your cervix. The staff at a lab will look at those cells under a microscope to see if they are abnormal.
While each person may differ in their level of discomfort with speculum exams, many patients describe Pap smears as mildly uncomfortable or crampy, says Dr. Teng. Once the speculum is inserted, your doctor uses the tiny brush to scrape off cells from the cervix (and some people barely feel this part).
Try to relax your body with breathing exercises or music. The biggest thing that a woman can do to make a Pap smear easier is to relax during the speculum exam, if she can, says Dr. Christianson. A slow, deep breathing exerciselike one you would do during meditationmay help.
Other things can cause cells to look abnormal, including irritation, some infections (such as a yeast infection), growths (such as polyps in the uterus), and changes in hormones that occur during pregnancy or menopause. Although these things may make cervical cells look abnormal, they are not related to cancer.
Talk to your nurse It may be helpful to book an appointment with your GP beforehand to talk through what will happen at the test and ways they can make it easier. Ask as many questions as you need and make sure you are fully aware of what is going to happen during the test and after.
Wear a long skirt If youre worried about feeling exposed, we recommend attending your screening wearing a long skirt so you can pull it up rather than completely removing trousers, suggests Dr Alex, adding: This can often help women feel more comfortable.
