Log footage is designed to be color graded in post-production, where you can restore the contrast and saturation, and apply creative adjustments to enhance the mood and style of your video.
The most important thing in editing stock footage is finding the right clip and format. Once youve done this, you can begin the process of color correcting and grading, reframing, playing with speed, and adding VFX, transitions, audio, and other things.

Steps for logging footage Import the footage into your NLE. First up, youll want to open up your NLE (non-linear editors such as docHub Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve). Organize the footage. Next, youll want to organize the footage. Add metadata to the footage. Mark and rate the footage.
Log grading is specifically used when the footage has been shot in a log format, which is a type of video format that preserves more details in the shadows and highlights of the image. In log grading, the colorist adjusts the colors in the log footage to make them appear more natural and balanced.
Tools such as the Lumetri Color Panel in docHub Premiere Pro CC and the Color Board in Apple Final Cut Pro X, make it easy for the an editor to work with log footage and make color adjustments. These tools are quite robust and mimic some of the foundational color tools found in traditional color grading suites.
The big defining characteristic of LOG is its flat image profile. It looks this way because LOG retains a lot more color information than other footage types. So while LOG may not look pretty out of the box, it actually gives you much more flexibility when color correcting and color grading your footage.
