It turns out that what we know now from the research is that LOTW isnt as effective as we wish it was. Why Letter of the Week isnt best 👉 Research is telling us that when we teach letters in isolation children have no way to connect those letters to something meaningful and relatable.
You teach one letter each week for 26 weeks, and at the end, ta-da! letters learned! You dont have to worry about the order of teaching letters, its all laid out for you, nice and neat. You start with the letter A and end with the letter Z, easy-peasy!
Theres no built-in repetition. With 26 letters in the alphabet, a letter of the week model simply doesnt allow for multiple exposures throughout the academic year. After 26 weeks of school, youll find yourself nearing the end of the school year without having time to review or reteach in a meaningful way.
👉 Letter of the Week doesnt lend well to differentiation. With LOTW, all children have to be working on the same letter at the same time whether they are ready for letter learning or not. And whether they already know that letter or not.
How to Teach the Alphabet Without Letter of the Week Read to Your Students. Write with Your Students. Make Name Kits. How to Teach the Alphabet with Individual Name Cards. Make a Class Alphabet Book. Sort Magnetic Letters. Sing ABC Songs. Environmental Print Activities.
Letters that occur frequently in simple words (e.g., a, m, t) are taught first. Letters that look similar and have similar sounds (b and d) are separated in the instructional sequence to avoid confusion. Short vowels are taught before long vowels.
Letter-of-the-Week Doesnt Develop Literacy Although Letter-of-the-Week is an organized and manageable approach for teachers to introduce the alphabetits not actually effective! Research does NOT support a letter-of-the-week approach. We can do better!
