What is an AMI How do we implement it?

An AMI serves as the basic deployment unit for services provided by EC2. Each AMI is configured with a template for the root volume needed for a specific type of instance. In a typical example, there might be an operating system, an application server and applications.

Can I change the AMI of an EC2 instance?

The answer is that you cannot replace the AMI for an existing EC2 instance. However, you can replace the root volume with a new volume which is basically the same thing. That new root volume can come from another EC2 instance.

How do I move an EC2 instance to another AMI?

Log into the AWS Management Console, navigate to the EC2 dashboard, and select the instance you want to modify. Choose the Actions menu, then Instance State, and click Stop. Remember, the instance must be completely stopped; hibernation wont suffice for this process.
