The adjusting journal entry will credit accounts receivable and debit the cash account once that money is received. The revenue was earned and recognized earlier, so an adjusting journal entry is needed to properly recognize the cash that has now been received.
The adjusting entry for a prepaid expense includes a debit to a expense account and a credit to an asset account. Recall that Prepaid Expenses is an asset account and the adjusting entry must decrease its balance because some of the expense has expired in the period.
In accounting, these payments or prepaid expenses are recorded as assets on the balance sheet. Once incurred, the asset account is reduced, and the expense is recorded on the income statement.
Such expenses which are concerned with the next financial year but have been paid in the current year are called prepaid expenses. Prepaid expense journal entry is recorded by debiting the particular expense and crediting cash. Prepaid Expenses are also known as Unexpired or Advance Expenses.
For example, if the supplies account had a $300 balance at the beginning of the month and $100 is still available in the supplies account at the end of the month, the company would record an adjusting entry for the $200 used during the month (300 100).
What Is an Adjusting Journal Entry? An adjusting journal entry is an entry in a companys general ledger that occurs at the end of an accounting period to record any unrecognized income or expenses for the period.
To recognize prepaid expenses that become actual expenses, use adjusting entries. As you use the prepaid item, decrease your Prepaid Expense account and increase your actual Expense account. To do this, debit your Expense account and credit your Prepaid Expense account. This creates a prepaid expense adjusting entry.
