If its a free standing quote to begin the essay, you dont need to reference it through MLA format. Just put it in quotation marks, italicize it, and give credit to whoever said it.
Epigraphs are typically formatted as follows: Placed within quotation marks. Indented from the left. Followed by an em-dash and the author of the quotes name on another line.
If the source of the epigraph is from an academic source (e.g., scholarly book or journal) or a quotation used with permission (APA, 2020, p. 278), cite the source using the typical formatting for an in-text citation and include the source in the list of references (APA, 2020, p. 278).
If the rest of the document is formatted ing to the APA Style rules, the epigraph must follow those rules as well: The epigraph should appear before the first line of text and should be indented 0.5 in. from the left margin, like a block quotation, without quotation marks (APA, 2020, p. 277).
An epigraphs source is not listed in the References section. Exceptions to this are an epigraph from a scholarly book or journal and a quotation used by permission. In these cases, cite the author, year, and page number at the end of the epigraph, in parentheses with no periodjust as you would for a block quote.
A short quotation at the beginning of a chapter or article is called an epigraph. The quote is treated like an extract and indented from the left margin. Only the authors name (and only the authors last name if he or she is well-known) and the books title should be given in italics.
Epigraphs are treated like block quotations in that quotation marks are not used around epigraphs. Also like block quotations, epigraphs are often set in a smaller typeface and indented from the right or left, and sometimes italicized.
How to Format an Epigraph Indent it from the left just like you would a block quotation. Make sure to use quotation marks around the phrase. Under the block quote, flush right and with an em dash, should be the authors name. Literary epigraphs mostly follow this formatting, but there are always exceptions.
